16/08/2022 Raymond Briggs - 18 January 1934 – 9 August 2022

an English illustrator, cartoonist, graphic novelist and author. He is best known in Britain for his 1978 story The Snowman, a book without words the animated version of which  a musical adaptation is televised each Christmas.

At what must have been early in his career Raymond Briggs turned up at a meeting of the Society of Strip Illustration in Chelsea. Just the once. Possibly because our interests – page rates, return of artwork, reprint payments – were not the concerns of an individual with his own ideas of how things could and would be done.

Initially illustrating childrens book for a variety of publisher he went on to write and draw his own stories. These appealed to both children and adults and won popular and critical acclaim.

While presenting himself as an individual with no great affection for children, or indeed adults. he was one of the rare artists known and loved by the British public
